Yes, Frank was a high level Judo player all his life..while in Taiwan during Vietnam Frank studied Kuntao from a very respected local. By mixing the Kuntao with Judo Frank has developed a very effective system. An incredible teacher, he is reatively unknown only teaching by invitation. The word Kuntao can be misleading in some areas. Franks has completely stripped his art of anything that is wasteful. It is based more on pricniples rather than actual technique. We currently have a group that studies together here in RI and after many years in different arts, once I started training with Frank, all others went out the window (except my blade studies).
One thing to note, the word "kuntao, Guntow, Kuntau etc" can be misleading and people put way too much emphasis on names. Frank has developed a "hybrid" art that is based soley on street self defense. He doesn't care what you call it, as long as it works!! Hope that helps.

That sounds good! My Kuntao is all about self defense, street or otherwise. there is nothing in the system that is wasted. that is true Kuntao. There are no forms, everything is based on random play and the development of random reflex responce to attacks of all sorts. The ancients used it for the purposes of self defense, not entertainment...it is easily adapted to modern times. No need to change anything as I see it.

I am very picky on who i let into the Kuntao class due to the content of the style. Its not for every one. An individual has to be intelligent enough to understand the consequences of gaining these beautiful reflexes.

I understand where you are coming from here though...I have seen many BS looking Kuntao styles out there. In fact, most of what I have seen is.

Ron,
That is good to hear..we actually do have forms. They are a major factor in our strike development. The Difference though is that EVERY movement in our forms is seen on the principles we use in our self defense. I always hated forms until I started "feeling" Franks. When you do forms/kata the right way & for the right reasons there is huge benefit to them. We're not too far from each other Ron, maybe we can get together sometime and workout.

Sounds good. I actually have workshops going on here and there. Keep in touch with this forum and you can see when i am holding a Kuntao workshop. Then you can see what it is all about. Its quite fascinating actually. All these years and I am still impressed with the style. :)
